Explore the principles and practices at the heart of modern computing on City of Portsmouth College's A Level Computer Science course.
You'll gain a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of computer science, covering key topics such as algorithms, programming, data structures, computer systems, networks, and the impact of technology on society. You'll develop problem-solving and analytical thinking skills through the study of computational theory and logical reasoning, gaining an understanding of how computers process and store information.
Alongside theory, you'll gain hands-on experience by designing, writing, and testing programs. A major element of the course is the Non-Exam Assessment (NEA) project, where you create a solution to a real-world problem of your choice – from developing a game to building a business application.
This course is a great choice if you enjoy logical challenges and creativity in equal measure, and it provides a strong foundation for university study or careers in software engineering, data science, cybersecurity, or AI.
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including a grade 5 or above in maths, and grade 5 or above in computer science (if taken).
You will have a 9.55am start, one lesson in the morning, one in the afternoon and a guaranteed 4.00pm finish.
Two written examinations at the end of year two and a piece of coursework which is worth 20% of the final grade.
You can progress to university with some of the directly related courses including software engineering, computer science, forensic computing and computer games technology. Apprenticeships in computer science and IT are also available, including higher degree apprenticeships.
