This course addresses many of the challenging issues facing the world today and is an engaging subject for those who enjoy exploring a wide diversity of topics, places and global issues. Be ready to question the world as you know it.
Units include:
No two days in the world are the same, and in geography we help you to understand and question this through the development of your knowledge and skills. As the subject is so wide-ranging, and develops high transferable skills, it is very attractive to future employers. Geography is also a facilitating subject, meaning it is highly valued by the top universities in the country. You will study a combination of physical and human geography. You will engage with a broad range of current issues at a range of scales, thereby deepening your knowledge and understanding of the world in which we live.
Four days of fieldwork in human and physical geography is a compulsory part of the course, often as a residential in Dorset. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a range of residential visits that enhance your study of geography. Previous trips have included Iceland, Rome, Berlin and Poland.
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including a grade 5 or above in GCSE English and a grade 4 or above in geography if taken at GCSE.
You will have a 9.55am start, one lesson in the morning, one in the afternoon and a guaranteed 4pm finish. You will also have at least one morning and one afternoon per week free for private study.
Assessments will comprise 20% Coursework and 80% Exams.
You can progress to careers in commerce, industry, transport, tourism and the public sectors. Directly related careers include cartography, surveying, environmental management, market research, teaching, transport and city planning. It engenders many transferable skills which enables careers in less directly related fields such as law, banking, social research, cyber security and risk management. Many progress to higher education, including Russell Group universities.
