This A Level will enable you to explore and debate many of the controversial, but important issues facing society today, to an in-depth level. The course is perfect for anyone with an interest in the topics covered below.
Units include:
Philosophy of religion:
- arguments for and against the existence of God
- the problem of evil
- self, death and afterlife.
Ethics:
- what is meant by ‘right’ and ‘wrong’?
- free will and moral responsibility
- human and animal ethics.
An in-depth study into a major world religion: Buddhism
You will have the opportunity to go on local and international trips, including visits to places of worship, university lectures, museums and art exhibitions.
You will be discussing ideas and different viewpoints every lesson, so you will learn how to argue and debate effectively. You will develop academic writing skills, critical evaluation and the ability to reach credible conclusions. You will also develop a deeper understanding of contemporary political debate on many issues and will be able to engage in academic discussions on current ethical questions, gaining a much clearer understanding of multicultural Britain and issues of equality, diversity, representation and integration.
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English language.
You will have a 9.55am start, one lesson in the morning, one in the afternoon and a guaranteed 4.00pm finish. You will also have at least one morning and one afternoon per week free for private study.
You will be assessed via two three-hour written examinations at the end of your second year.
You can progress to higher education and explore extensive career opportunities in policing, social work, teaching, politics and law. This is a very well-regarded academic qualification, demonstrating a range of transferable skills.

Politics students back from dream US trip
A group of A Level Politics students are back from a fantastic six-day residential study trip to Washington DC. Lecturer Steve Fitzgerald tells us all about it.

Abbey Road visit hits the right note
A group of Music Technology students have had an amazing trip to London’s legendary Abbey Road Institute.
