This apprenticeship standard is for those looking to become a Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump (RACHP) Engineering Technician, a specialist occupation involving planning, preparing and safely carrying out work activities in process, product and space cooling.
Units include:
- legislation, regulations and standards
- underpinning principles of thermodynamics, gas laws, psychrometrics, fluid flow, electricity, properties of refrigerant fluids and lubricants
- understanding relevant diagrams, calculations, tools, charts, tables and formulae and apply them as appropriate
- system fundamentals
- sustainability and system operations.
Working with our highly skilled team, you will have the opportunity to learn current and future technology and skills. You will also be able to work within our new Net Zero Training Hub, the first of its kind in the UK, dedicated to training and upgrading skills in sustainable technologies.
To successfully complete the apprenticeship you will need both maths and English at grade 4 or above, or Functional Skills Level 2. If necessary, these can be studied at College alongside your apprenticeship.
College attendance is one day a week. Your assessor will liaise with you to set up mutually convenient times for consultation and assessment visits at your place of work. You will spend 6 hours of your apprenticeship working towards your off-the-job learning, which can consist of college attendance, homework/coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring, and coaching – plus a number of other tasks (more information can be shared).
Your final grade will be determined by collective performance in the three assessments in the endpoint assessment.
• online knowledge-based tests
• skills test (knowledge and behaviours are observed in the workplace)
• professional discussion (to demonstrate that you can apply the broad range of knowledge, skills and behaviours in the Standard).
You will build a portfolio of work and workplace assessors will be in regular contact to provide support, and to arrange onsite visits to observe your ability and skills in your daily role. It is important for you to take ownership of your own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with your employer. Learning in college will be delivered through a mixture of classes, work-related activities and independent study and research.
This standard is designed to meet the professional standards of the Engineering Council for registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) in partnership with the Institute of Refrigeration and CIBSE. Completion of your apprenticeship will enable you to progress in the industry.
