Students seeking the skills and knowledge to start a career helping young adults, adults with specific needs, people with disabilities and the elderly.
Units include:
- health and social care values
- effective communication
- social influencers on health and wellbeing
- the impact of nutrition
- cultural diversity
- diabetes awareness
- dementia awareness
- infection prevention and control
- principles of safeguarding.
You will have the opportunity to undertake placements within the charity, social and health sectors. You will also be encouraged to participate in National Health Service campaigns, raising awareness amongst fellow students as well as attending course-related trips within the local area and further afield.
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English.
This course is full time for one year and you are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours in a work placement setting. Attendance at maths and English lessons at the appropriate level are also expected as part of this programme.
You will learn and be assessed by a range of methods including assignments, projects, presentations, role plays, displays and practical lessons. You will regularly review your work with your tutor and receive feedback on your progress.
You could progress to a full-time Level 3 health and social care qualification, an apprenticeship or into employment within the health and social care sector. Possible roles include care support worker in adult residential settings; healthcare assistant in community, primary care and acute health environments; care support worker in domiciliary services, supported living or day services or community-based support worker.
