This course enables you to focus on the anatomy of the human body, diagnosing medical illnesses and how these are treated. It also looks into medical research and case studies.
Units include:
- human health and disease
- physiological techniques
- medical science research methods
- medicines and treatment of disease
- clinical laboratory techniques
- medical case studies.
Developed in conjunction with universities and clinical pathology laboratories, the course provides an engaging and meaningful context-led approach to the development of scientific knowledge and skills. It enables you to develop the tools necessary to understand, assess and suggest solutions to real-world medical problems and challenges. The course places significant stress on the development of good practical skills necessary to monitor health and disease.
You will have the opportunity to experience university open days on healthcare sciences such as radiography, paramedic science and nursing. You will also visit labs at local universities to meet professionals in the field of pharmacology, oncology and nursing, and take part in practical classes.
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English language, maths and science. GCSE biology is preferred if taken.
You will have a 9.55am start, one lesson in the morning, one in the afternoon and a guaranteed 4pm finish. You will also have at least one morning and one afternoon per week free for private study.
Assessments will comprise 60% personal investigation and 40% externally set practical exam. Your coursework is internally assessed and externally moderated.
You could progress to university to study a biomedical degree or pursue a career in nursing, midwifery or other health-related roles.

Airbus inspires in WiSTEM event
Six of our A Level maths, physics and engineering students visited Airbus in Hilsea for a Women in STEM event. They learned about possible careers in the space and engineering sector, discovered how satellites are designed, tested and built, and were even able to try out some of the equipment and processes for themselves.
