Are you creative and imaginative and do you enjoy exploring ideas and looking at things in different ways? If you do then, fine art is for you.
Fine Art A Level is the broadest of all the individual specialisms, covering a wide variety of media and techniques. These include traditional drawing, painting and sculpture as well as more contemporary art processes including installation art, photography, printmaking and digital imagery.
You will begin with a series of workshops, encouraging you to explore the most effective way to visually communicate your ideas. You will then begin working on your personal portfolio, developing creative confidence through investigations and idea development through drawing and experimenting with different techniques and processes. You will be encouraged to explore themes and concepts that reflect your personal interests. You will then work on your personal investigation, building on skills and techniques learned in Year 1.
You will develop your technical skills through investigations into other artists' work, refining your practice through sustained practical projects. The course will help you develop a sophisticated visual aesthetic and understand the use of colour, mark-making style and technique, encouraging you to be self-critical and inquisitive.
You will be encouraged to get involved in local opportunities, working with galleries such as Aspex to broaden your understanding of the role that fine art can play in society, as well as entering competitions nationally. There will also be opportunities built into the course for you to meet and work with local artists, visit galleries nationally and immerse yourself in the creative world.
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English language grade 5 or above in art (if taken at GCSE). Evidence of drawing ability shown through a portfolio will be required at interview.
You will have a 9.55am start, one lesson in the morning, one in the afternoon and a guaranteed 4pm finish. You will also have at least one morning and one afternoon per week free for private study.
All work is assessed and standardised internally, including the end of course practical examination project, before it is finally moderated by a senior examiner representing the examination board. In this way, rigorous, consistent and fair marking is assured for all students.
Possible degree options include 2D and 3D animation, 3D design, applied arts, architecture, art history, art therapy, ceramics, digital media, fine art painting, fine art printmaking, fine art sculpture, game design, illustration, industrial design, interior architecture and design, visual communication and visual effects for film and TV.
