It’s time to take the next step on your journey to become a qualified counsellor. On this qualification you’ll start to look at a range of counselling theories and continue to practise your skills with your fellow learners. As you prepare to move on to practitioner training at Level 4, you’ll be increasing your skills and knowledge, building on the learning you gained at Level 2.
Who is the course for?
- Those who want to take the next step in training to become a counsellor.
- Those who want to learn more about counselling theory, ethics and mental health.
- Those preparing for work as a professional counsellor in an agency setting.
The course content is divided in to seven units:
1. Prepare to work within an ethical framework for counselling
2. Understand the counselling relationship
3. Understand difference and diversity issues to develop empathic understanding
4. Work within a user-centred approach to counselling
5. Use counselling theory to develop self-awareness in counselling practice
6. Understand theories of counselling and mental health
7. Use feedback, reflection and supervision to support counselling studies
You will need to have a Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills (or equivalent) or the Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) equivalent of at least 75 GLH, a Level 2 qualification in English (GCSE, Functional Skills, or equivalent) or to successfully complete an English comprehension test at Level 2 and successfully complete an enrolment interview.
We are running two separate Level 3 Certificate in Counselling courses (depending on student enrolment numbers). You could either study on Wednesdays 6-9pm or Thursdays 6-9pm.
You will be expected to attend all of your timetabled sessions on time, unless you have agreed beforehand with your lecturer.
For qualification classes the expectation is a minimum of 85% attendance. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late for class, you may be asked to leave. If you are absent for three consecutive weeks without notice, you will automatically be withdrawn from the course.
You will be assessed through a variety of methods (activity, group work, photographic and video) which will be presented through a portfolio of evidence and in conjunction with a final written examination. As a student on the programme, you will have weekly tutorials and receive feedback to discuss your progress and to set achievement targets. All our programmes are planned around your individual learning needs, with every student having a timetable that clearly identifies the sessions that will be taught. You will be assigned a Programme Lead who will support you throughout your time in college.
This qualification can enhance your employability and support you in roles such as mentoring, advocacy, health and social care or any role where you are helping people.
