Further your communication skills with a qualification in British Sign Language. Achieving this qualification means that you will be able to understand and use varied British Sign Language in a range of work and social situations.
You will develop an advanced knowledge of the structure and function of British Sign Language and an understanding of the deaf community and deaf culture.
You will need to demonstrate competency in both receptive and productive skills at Level 3 to complete the qualification.
Who is the course for?
- those who work on a regular basis with deaf people (for example social workers, teachers of the deaf, communicators, voluntary workers, workers within deaf organisations, schools, etc).
- those who aspire to work in these contexts
- those who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in British Sign Language.
Course topics include:
- home life
- social/recreational activities
- education and training
- employment
- consumer issues and daily living
- deaf history and culture.
You will need to hold a Level 2 qualification in British Sign Language, English (GCSE, Functional Skills or equivalent) or to successfully complete an English comprehension test at Level 2, and successfully complete an enrolment interview.
Classes will be held for three hours a week on Thursdays between 6-9pm. All students are expected to attend all their timetabled sessions on time, unless prior agreement has been made and agreed with their tutor.
For qualification classes, the expectation is a minimum of 85% attendance. If a student arrives more than 10 minutes late for class, they may be asked to leave. If a student is absent for three consecutive weeks without notice, they will automatically be withdrawn from the course.
Your progress will be assessed through a variety of methods within the classroom (e.g. activities, presentations, group work, photographic and video projects). There will be three recorded practical examinations in each unit, which are externally assessed at the end of the course.
The qualification is divided into these three assessments:
- formal presentation
- informal conversation
- receptive skills.
You could go on to study further British Sign Language courses.
