This course is designed to enable learners to develop their skills to communicate with deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of everyday situations.
It will allow you to participate in longer and more varied conversations than at Level 1. The course will develop communication in BSL about real life, routine, and daily experiences. You will be able to deal with most routine communication and have enough understanding of grammar to cope with some non-routine communication.
Who is the course for?
- those who wish to achieve language skills at an intermediate level to improve communication with deaf people
- deaf learners who wish to gain a qualification in their native language
- family, friends and colleagues of deaf people
- those who want to progress from Level 1 study in BSL, and who may want to progress to more advanced levels at a later date
- Those who are studying for personal development.
You will need to hold a Level 1 Award or Certificate in British Sign Language and a Level 1 qualification in English (GCSE, Functional Skills or equivalent) or to successfully complete an English comprehension test at Level 1.
Classes will be held for three hours a week, Tuesdays 6.00pm to 9.00pm. All students are expected to attend all of their timetabled sessions on time, unless prior agreement has been made and agreed with their tutor.
For qualification classes the expectation is a minimum of 85% attendance. If a student arrives more than ten minutes late for class they may be asked to leave. If a student is absent for three consecutive weeks without notice they will automatically be withdrawn from the course.
You will be assessed through a variety of methods within the classroom (activity, group work, photographic and video) and in conjunction with a final recorded practical examination in each unit.
Units BSL201, BSL202 and BSL203 are externally assessed by a Signature assessor.
As a student on the programme, you will have weekly tutorials and receive feedback to discuss your progress and to set achievement targets. All our programmes are planned around your individual learning needs, with every student having a timetable that clearly identifies the sessions that will be taught. You will be assigned a Programme Lead who will support you throughout your time in college.
The qualification is divided into three units:
- BSL Receptive Skills
- BSL Productive Skills
- BSL Conversational Skills.
And will focus on three of the following themes: everyday conversation, eating & drinking, spending & shopping and travel & holidays.
You could go on to study further Signature BSL courses.
